THE FIVE MINUTE PLAN

Mr. Reynolds
has delivered his dynamic message to thousands of children
and teens. These are the critical years: after age 19, almost
no one takes up the smoking habit. MAKE JUST ONE LOCAL CALL to start the ball rolling for an appearance in your city by Patrick Reynolds. Here's what to do:
|
The Five Minute Plan
1. Simply phone the main number of a large hospital in your area. Ask the operator for Community Relations Director.
2. Suggest they sponsor Patrick Reynolds, the well known tobacco-free advocate and grandson of tobacco company founder R.J. Reynolds, on a tour of your community's high or middle schools. (See the BASIC TALKING POINTS below.)
3. Point out that the media coverage of his talk to youth will build excellent goodwill for them, and will also make a real difference in the community.
4. Suggest that they drop by our website, www.notobacco.org.
If you reach the Community Relations Director's assistant, suggest that they go to this website site and print the complete information package for their boss.
You're done!
If you want to spend an additional five minutes:
1. Print out and mail our complete information package to the person you spoke to.
2. Follow up with a phone call after a week to ten days. The talking points below will be helpful.
All done? Now there's a good chance that Patrick Reynolds will soon be giving talks at schools in your community.
You might want to PRINT this page out now to remind you to make the call. Click PRINT on your browser's toolbar just above.
BASIC TALKING POINTS
Let your enthusiasm show!
- Say you have an excellent speaker you'd like to see speak in the community.
- Tell them it's Patrick Reynolds, the grandson of tobacco company founder R.J. Reynolds, who turned his back on the family tobacco business to become a smokefree advocate, after losing his father to smoking.
- Mention that hospitals who have brought him in recently have enjoyed strong and very positive media coverage. And his talk drew raves. Read them a line or two of quotes from people who have seen him speak, from our page, What Past Clients Say.
- Give them this website address -- www.notobacco.org -- and suggest they visit the site, where the complete information package is posted and may be printed out. If you want to spend an additional five minutes, print out complete information package and mail it to them. Or perhaps their assistant will do it.
Thank you for caring. Together we can make a real difference!
ADDITIONAL IDEAS
Send in materials from this web site; if you like,
click here to see a cover letter draft and complete
information package.
Send in both of these to them. YOu could even make an appointment
and go in to see them for a meeting.
Click for the actual content of Mr.
Reynolds' talk to youth.
Ask them about the possibility of writing a grant
proposal for the tour, and for the name of a good grant proposal
writer. The local American Cancer Society or Lung Association's
grant proposal writer would probably be an excellent choice, as
they probably have written tobacco education proposals before.
Several states have allocated a portion of their cigarette tax
for tobacco ed programs for children; others have moneys for this
from the ASSIST program. It's partly a matter of knowing whom
to submit a grant proposal to.
Ask whether they would like to be mailed some information
about the lecture. As an alternative, offer them our web address,
http://www.notobacco.org.
If they prefer to have materials mailed to them,
you can do so, or simply give them our phone number, (310) 471-0303.
Better still, you could call or e-mail us with the person's name
and contact info. You can then be assured that we will send out
the materials to them. Our gratitude and thanks to you for your
caring and effort!
Please ask them to call our office for the current fee schedule. Mr. Reynolds' honorarium for non-profit groups is less than other national name speakers.
For speaking tours of two days or more, the rate goes down. Each additional day he would give up to two talks. He would also give media interviews and a reception, if desired. Tour rates apply only when a single client arranges and contracts for the entire tour. Call us for details.
SEND MATERIALS: THIS IS IMPORTANT!
SEND MATERIALS! After you have made some of these points over the phone, follow up by sending materials out. Or you can call our office with their address, and we'll send our materials.
Our website offers all of the information which we would send out in hard copy form. Please do print out our complete information package and draft of our cover letter to co-sponsors. If you call us, we'll be happy to send them from our office instead.
FOLLOW UP CALLS ARE IMPORTANT, TOO
It's vital to establish a warm relationship by making follow up calls every two weeks or so, until you get an answer. Don't be shy! Most people will be glad you called back to remind them. Materials tend to sit on people's desks, buried in piles, and it's your follow up calls which will motivate them into action. So remember to make your follow up calls.
Persistence and your genuine enthusiasm on the phone will result in attaining your goal!
CONTINUE ON, using our cosponsor. Use the same talking points on each one on the list.
THANK YOU FOR CARING!
We'd like to thank you! We fully acknowledge your caring and commitment by organizing a talk to children by Mr. Reynolds. By educating our youth about smoking early, we can make a real difference in their lives. We're fighting on the same team, for the same goal -- a smokefree society. Patrick Reynolds' closing promise to the children is that we will have a smokefree society one day.
Our thanks to you for helping to make that dream come true!
